Obituary of Helen Sobotka

Helen Sobotka, 93 years young, was taken by Angels to meet our Lord, Jesus Christ in Heaven. She will live with Him and the Saints forever and we will see her again. Born and raised in Syracuse, New York, Helen will be remembered for living a life that was dedicated to family, friends and to her place of worship, St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church! This church became her 2nd home where she volunteered for over 30 years! She and her group of other virtuous Ukrainian women worked making Ukrainian foods for many occasions that included the yearly St. John's Festival. Helen was also honored by Mayor Stephanie Minor for the work that she had done in the community. Helen retired from General Electric after 35 years of loyal service. Her career was highlighted by her knowledge in the IT field…at its very beginnings! She was also very active in the Republican Party for over 40 years making hundreds of friends along the way. She enjoyed over 10 years living in beautiful Sarasota, Florida and having fun on Siesta Key Beach! She especially loved Margaret, Tom, and Thomas Tartarian! Her Florida buddies. She also loved the seas and had great times with family on several cruises and adventures. Helen was predeceased by her husband, Edward; parents who came to the United States from Eastern Europe through Ellis Island; Jacob and Anna Buhai; 2 Sisters, Mary Meckowski (Edward), Irene Mitzo (William), and a brother Michael Buhai (Mary) Surviving is her daughter, Dr. Cynthia Roundy (Daniel); sons Edward Sobotka (Christine) and Richard Sobotka; grandchildren, Shawn Roundy, Justin Roundy (Amy), Eric Roundy, Jason Sobotka (Jennifer), Lori Sobotka (Andrew), Brandon Sobotka, several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Thanks to those volunteers and nurses at "Francis House" which was Helen's final home and who continue to do God's work. The family also wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, flowers and messages of support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memoriam of Helen Sobotka to Francis House and Golisano's Children's Hospital. Calling hours will be held Wednesday June 30th from 4-7 PM at the Macko-Vassallo Funeral Home, 1609 W. Genesee St. The Apostleship of Prayer will recite the Rosary at 4:00 PM Wednesday and the Panakhyda service will be held at 7:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be held Thursday July 1st at 10:00 AM in the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 207 Tompkins St. Syracuse. Helen will be laid to rest in the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. Following the services at the cemetery the family invites you to a memorial luncheon at Coleman's Irish Pub on Tompkins St. "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life." -John 5:24
